The Gulf Stream brings warm air and mild temperatures to Cornwall, particularly close to the sea.  Echium pininana ('Tower of Jewels' or 'Tree Echium') is native to the Canary Islands, but thrives and happily self-seeds.  Buzzing with bees, the blue and purple flowers soaring from a cottage garden beside the coast path contrast nicely with the orange of this rocky headland on the Lizard peninsular.
